Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean and a spectacular place for a golf break. Along with the world’s top hotels and resorts, stunning beaches, reefs and lagoons make the island a dream for those looking for a relaxing holiday in the sun but there is more to the island than the coast.
There are some fabulous golf courses in Mauritius and the island makes for a superb golf holiday. The interior of the island is mountainous, with forests and a national park which is the perfect backdrop to a round of golf.
When planning on playing golf in Mauritius you want to try and go between May and December. This is when the weather is cool, sunny and dry, giving you the best chance of enjoying plenty of time on the golf course.
The question is, which golf courses in Mauritius should you play?
You will find some of the big names in the world of golf have been in Mauritius and Anahita has been designed by Ernie Els. This is regarded by many to be the top championship golf course in Mauritius and the best Els course in the world.
Located in a lovely position between the ocean and the hills of Mauritius, Anahita Golf has played host to the AfrAsia Masters among other top tournaments. The final three holes are played alongside the coast and make for a tremendous finish to the round.
Anahita Golf & Spa
Heading to the southwestern corner of the island you will find another one of the top golf courses in Mauritius. Paradis Golf Club was designed by David Dutton and two holes are played across the marina, which adds a new challenge and water hazard to the course. The 9th hole has a green which is built into the marina but it’s the back nine which really captures the imagination. The nine holes work their way towards the hills before turning back to the clubhouse for a great finish.
Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort
The Links Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage is one of two golf courses at this resort and arguably the best. Created by Rodney Wright and Peter Alliss, the Links Course is used for several tournaments throughout the year and although short by modern standards, playing to 6,498 yards, strategy plays a big role.
Water comes into play on six holes but there are many birdie opportunities, with the short par-4’s at the 4th and 17th two good examples.
Constance Belle Mare Plage
In contrast to many of the other golf courses in Mauritius, the Legends Course plays through a wooded environment, with tree-lined fairways. However, the fairways remain generally wide throughout the 18 holes but water does come into play on many of them. Look out for the par-3 17th hole which features a shot over an inlet to a green which is well-protected by bunkers.
The golf courses in Mauritius are superb and you will have a great time playing at each of the four highlighted above.
