Durban Country Club Golf Course
The Durban Country Club remains one of South Africa’s premier golf courses and has hosted the South African Open Championships numerous times. Situated along the shores of the Indian Ocean, this semi-links course has been carved into the dunes, both scenic and demanding. To score well here you have to play well. The tees are elevated and the greens are guarded by an array of tropical bushes, tall trees, and large bunkers. This, together with the narrow fairways and steep slopes, makes for a challenging course.
You know, when your golf course has been featured on top 100 lists of the world’s greatest golf layouts for several years, you are in for a golfing treat. Add to this the differentiation of possessing the world’s very greatest third hole and the Durban Country Club becomes the ideal golf course for a South African golf holiday.
An integration of lush coastal vegetation, sand dunes, and amazing Indian Ocean views create one of the world’s most unique and challenging golf courses. One of Durban Country Club’s defining features is the tremendous undulations on the fairways, particularly noticeable at the 5th, 8th, and 17th holes. The coastal sand dunes on which the course is developed offer a typical links-style layout, offering both amateur and pro golfer an interesting and at times difficult tests in order to score well.
An exciting journey from start to finish, Durban’s highlights usually come on holes where the significant changes in gradients are used within the fairways. For instance, the massive bumps leading up to the elevated 17th green and those leading up to the par five eighth are some of the largest on the course and the optical intimidation they present to golfers has helped protect the layout from becoming obsolete in the wake of technological progress. However, the city’s development has had an impact on the club with the course now wedged between two major coastal roads and the 16th hole being realigned to accommodate an autobahn’s widening.
Not only is this bucket list golf but also one of South Africa’s finest golf courses.
