Pinehurst is one of those destinations where the itinerary matters almost as much as the individual courses. If it is your first visit, I would normally make Pinehurst Resort part of the trip because staying there gives you access to the courses that make the resort experience so special. From there, I like to mix in some of the outstanding Sandhills golf beyond the resort.

Tobacco Road is the obvious contrast. Mike Strantz created something completely different from the classic Donald Ross courses around Pinehurst — dramatic shaping, huge visual features and holes that ask you to commit to the shot. Pine Needles and Mid Pines then bring you back to traditional Sandhills golf.

For me, the best Pinehurst trips are rarely about playing one resort every day. They combine the history and atmosphere of Pinehurst with the variety of the wider area, built around the group’s budget, time and must-play courses.

Pinehurst Resort provides the most complete version of the experience.
You are immersed in the history of the resort and have access to courses that are
prioritised for members and overnight resort guests.

The Carolina Hotel is the flagship choice, while the Holly Inn
and Manor provide different ways of staying within the Pinehurst Resort environment.

This is the option I would favour when playing Pinehurst No. 2
or the wider Pinehurst Resort course collection is central to the trip.

the centre of the holiday.

Stay at Talamore or another nearby base and combine strong-value Sandhills

Combine Pinehurst No. 2 with Tobacco Road, Pine Needles, Mid Pines and

Understanding Pinehurst Resort Golf

Pinehurst Resort has an extensive collection of courses, but access is important
when planning the trip. Several of the resort’s leading courses are reserved for
members and overnight resort guests, which is one reason staying within Pinehurst
can be worthwhile when the resort courses are your priority.

Pinehurst No. 2 carries an additional premium and minimum-stay
requirements can apply to selected championship courses. Our team can build the
accommodation and golf together so the itinerary reflects the courses that matter
most to your group.

Pinehurst is also continuing to develop. The new
Pinehurst No. 11, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw,
is scheduled to open on 29 March 2027.

When to Play Golf in Pinehurst

Spring and autumn are the principal golf seasons in the North Carolina Sandhills.
Summer can still work well for groups prepared for warmer conditions, while winter
can offer quieter golf and attractive value.

Spring (Mar–May)

One of the strongest periods for a dedicated Pinehurst golf trip, with
comfortable conditions and high demand for premium tee times.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Hotter and more humid. Earlier tee times can make the playing schedule
more comfortable.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Another excellent golf period, with comfortable temperatures and strong
demand across the Sandhills.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Quieter and more variable, but potentially attractive for groups whose
priority is value and availability.

Planning tip:
If Pinehurst No. 2 or another specific premium course is essential,
build the itinerary around that tee time rather than leaving it until last.

Getting to Pinehurst

Pinehurst is normally reached through a major North Carolina gateway followed by
a road transfer into the Sandhills. The best flight and transfer combination will
depend on your travel dates, group size and overall itinerary.
