Mountain Course at La Quinta Resort & Club

The La Quinta Resort requires little introduction. During the golden age of cinema, you would have rubbed shoulders with many a movie icon at La Quinta. The Mountain Course at La Quinta Resort & Club is located right in the heart of the resort, alongside the other four golf courses that make up the 90 holes of championship golf on offer at one of Palm Springs’s, if not the, largest golf resorts.

Pete Dye’s Mountain Course is nestled at the base of the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains. The Pete Dye-designed course is well-known for its playability and spectacular scenery. This extremely difficult course features rock formations, pot bunkers, massive elevation drops from the tee boxes, elevation changes from tee to tee boxes, and well-bunkered greens.

The first hole is a relatively short par 4 where distance off the tee is not a factor for a course of this calibre and stature from its designer. To get the best view of the green, aim your tee shot just left of the right fairway bunker. The first green is on a plateau and requires an uphill second shot. Make sure you have enough club on your approach and that you are approaching from the right side.

The signature hole here, and what a hole it is, is the 16th hole at the Mountain course, which is a par 3 and so typical of a Pete Dye golf course. This par three plays slightly downhill to a green that resembles a pear. At 167 yards from the championship tees, take one less club and aim for the green.

This really is desert golf at its finest and certainly a resort to consider for your next golf holiday to the beauty and wonder that is California. The mountain course is regularly featured in the Top 100 of North America and it is easy to see just why.
