Our resident long haul expert and keen golfer, Robin Couchman, has been on his travels again and lucky enough to discover what he believes to be the next big golfing region for all year round, so here is his view on Qatar.

I was fortunate enough to visit to play golf in Qatar this year and the opportunity to play the two fantastic Championship courses they now have on offer to the golfing public. I believe this makes it a very viable and exciting “new” place to play golf. There will be a series of 3 posts with various offers and information about everything (focusing on the golf) that this middle eastern gem has on offer, starting with the “new kid on the block” Education City.
Opened in January 2020, Education City is fast earning itself quite a reputation. It will host the Qatar Masters (part of the European Tour Schedule 2019/2020) in March and after my round, I can see this will be a true test for all the professionals, that they will both enjoy and find challenging. Set to the backdrop of a wonderful skyline that includes one of the new stadiums for the Soccer World Cup in 2022, this 7306 yard Par 72 has all the typical hallmarks of the high standard you might expect from such a location. It was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal and the immaculately groomed course has subtle elevation changes, USGA greens, winding through the desert and wadi terrain.
However, it is not all about the 18-hole course, as they have also got one eye on the future generation of golfers with a Championship designed 6-hole golf course that encourage new players to the game and allows those golfers looking for a quick round, to still feel like they are able to get the best out of their time. There is a 9-hole Par 3 course that is ideal for beginners and experts alike, whether this is learning the game for the first time or fine-tuning your short game. With the added benefit of this 9-hole course being floodlit and the 6-hole ready for the same experience in early 2020, you are going to be spoilt for choice when arriving here for your round.
If all this was not enough, my attention was drawn to one of the most state-of-the-art, high tech, mind-blowing training and teaching facilities I have ever come across (and I have seen a few over the years). Officially known as the “Centre of Excellence”, it is a place that any golfer can go to check on every part of their game…from the golf swing, 3D analysis, technique, ball flight monitoring, biomechanics, to the mindset and well-being to make the most of your round. Couple this with extensive practice areas and even a Trackman on the ranges, you are going to leave with a whole new approach to the game. Education City is located only 15 minutes from West Bay and the beautiful Corniche, where there is an abundance of high-quality hotels that offer superb luxurious accommodation and a variety of dining options on-site.
