Dunes West Golf Club

The Dunes West Golf Club is nearly as heavily rooted in history as the golf itself.  The land that has become Dunes West was part of a land grant from 1696, and from 1712 to 1827 it was owned by the very same Vanderhorst family that formerly owned almost all of Kiawah Island. Fast forward to 1930 and the one-time Lexington Plantation was sold to Henrietta Hartford, the widow of Edward V. Hartford, and one of America’s wealthiest women.

No one can definitively know designed the first nine-hole golf course, but it’s sure there was no resemblance to the Arthur Hills layout that Dunes West golfers know and love today. Integrating parts of a land plan designed for the princess by New York ‘s famous Olmstead firm, Hills has generated a layout that has been prevalent with members and guests alike since it opened in 1991.

This course takes advantage of its fantastic setting. The opening holes have friendly landing areas and gorgeous and complex greens, complete with undulation and bunkering as only Arthur Hills could design. The back nine mixes the talents of camouflage with organic moss-draped oaks and marsh. The 18th hole, with the dual green partitioned by the Wagner Creek marsh, ends with a demanding shot indicative of the 18th in the Harbor Town.

Set amid Bermuda-covered dunes and 200-year-old oaks draped in Spanish moss this course blends its historically rich environment with the best golf facilities offered anywhere today. The clubhouse which was built on the site of the antebellum Lexington Plantation was specifically designed to capture the old southern charm of the Low country and as with the course takes full advantage of its picturesque setting to provide a memorable golf experience.
