The original Pinhal (Vilamoura II) opened its doors in 1976 under the design and guise of the one and only Frank Pennink. The second of the five now in existence it was designed taking in the natural terrain on offer, and therefore a majority of the course is tree-lined by umbrella pines, carob and olive trees. 1985 saw the course under new management and a very tough decision to improve upon what was already successful. This time saw the Robert Trent Jones Snr come in and added his influencial design changes making the course more playable for the most of discerning of golfers. The course continued to gain in popularity even when the additional courses of Laguna, and later still saw the extynsion of that adding the Millennium golf course. Pinhal is the go to course in Vilamoura,  one that under its new ownership and management will continue like good wine to only improve with age,.
