1. Old South Golf Links
Hilton Head Island has some great courses, a majority of which are on the main island, there is a number which is just over the bridge into Bluffton. Old South Golf Links is just one, it opened its doors in 1992 and was recognised by Golf Digest in the “Top Ten New Public Golf Courses”.
Located in the Lowcountry amongst the Intracoastal marshes of McKay’s Creek Old South Golf Links winds its way between the rolling terrain and towering oaks, measuring 6,772 yards from the Gold Tees it is a great to test and a popular choice for local and visitors alike.

Location: 50 Buckingham Plantation Dr, Bluffton
2. Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall
One of two golf courses on the Palmetto Hall Plantation, designer Arthur Hills designed and opened his course here at the Palmetto Hall in 1991, this 18 Hole Championship golf courses measures just short of 7,000 yards from the back tee with an unbelievable slope rating of 139. The white tees are where a majority of golfers will play at 6,257 yards this is plenty long enough for a better-than-average golfer to enjoy.
In true Arthur Hills style, the course is made up from undulating fairways. Cleverly designed mounding to test the best of golfers. The Towering Pines and oaks line many of the lush fairways with strategically placed lakes. Many greens are guarded by bunkering, a great course amongst so many others and another must-play on your visit to the island.

3. Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall
The Robert Cupp course at Palmetto Plantation is one of his better and original designs which tests the better golfers, yet is still enjoyable for the high handicapper too, Regarded as his Signature course and was one of the best on the island when it opened in 1993, it had a slope rating from the back tees of 152 highest in the state, this honour has only been surpassed since by Pete Dye and the Ocean Course at Kiawah at 155.
Despite the high rating from the tips, numerous tee boxes give the opportunity for all golfers to enjoy.

4. Oyster Reef Golf Club
The spectacular 18-Hole championship course that is Oyster Reef golf club is set within 190 acres of breath-taking Lowcountry terrain with winding lakes, hidden lagoons, lush vegetation, and fantastic views of Hilton Head Island. This semi-private golf course opened in 1982 and soon became a favourite of not the locals, but international visitors too.
Oyster Reef is a beautiful example of Lowcountry golf at its very best and one we highly recommend.

5. Hilton Head National Golf Club
Hilton Head National golf course is another classic from the Legendary Gary Player portfolio, situated in the Bluffton district of Hilton head island the golf course opened its doors in 1989 and is one of the only courses on the island to have two completely different sets of nine holes.
Gary Player has designed the golf course to be straightforward and not complicated, From the back Tees the golf course is a test for the best of golfers, but with plenty of tee boxes to choose from, golfers of all abilities should still enjoy what is, one of the most popular golf courses on the island.

6. Crescent Pointe Golf Club
Just 3 miles west of the bridge to Hilton head Islands lies the world-class Arnold Palmer Signature Crescent Pointe golf course. The only Arnold Palmer public golf course in the Hilton Head area Crescent Pointe highlights the overwhelming beauty that Hilton’s head has to offer. In true palmer design the fairways are wide and generous, yet cleverly challenging when approaching the elevated and undulating greens.
Water is prominent here with no less than 7 holes over water with very gettable par 3’s, inviting the challenge. Century Oaks are in abundance in the Bluffton area, none other than here, Arnold Palmer has made great use of each and everyone, and with immaculate condition making Crescent Pointe is one of the must-play Hilton Head golf courses when on holiday here.

7. Heron Point By Pete Dye
Measuring 7,035 yards from the back pegs Heron Point is a course to be reckoned with, in fact, it is regarded by many as the centrepiece of golf on Hilton Head Island and is one of three courses at the Sea Pines Resort. The legendary course architect Pete Dye personally supervised Heron Point’s recent modifications with the objective of making the course more player-friendly, and the result is an award-winning stroke of genius.
There are now sevens sets on each hole (including tees for juniors). Golfers are challenged by risk-reward long and short holes, fairways that move toward and away from hazards. Heron Point is a great design that is now enjoyed by golfers of all abilities.

8. Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront at Palmetto Dunes
There are three golf courses at Palmetto Dunes country club, all with their own characteristics, the Robert Trent Jones Course is a Jones classic, this tree-lined course is not for those with errant tee-shots, you Will be punished for over-exuberance here. Its locality to the rest of the resort is quite important, located adjacent to the Ocean the wind plays havoc and makes the course challenging for golfers of all abilities.
The hole of note here has to be the par 5, 10th hole with an elevated green – the view of the ocean is nothing less than spectacular, and all the more reason why you rose that little bit earlier to ensure you take in all that it has to offer.
Palmetto Dunes is one of the better Hilton Head golf courses and offers three choices surrounding the resort including the George Fazio Course.

9. Atlantic Dunes By Davis Love III
The Sea Pines Resort certainly has some quality golf courses, one of the best has to be none other than Atlantic Dunes, (not to be confused with palmetto dunes) in essence, Davis Love III has taken the very first course to be built on the island the Sea Pines Ocean Course and has redesigned and improved upon what was a great course.
Love has used the natural terrain offered by the Lowcountry incorporating the beachfront areas. Natural grasses play a big part here, combined with the native pines and oaks that line the fairways. Recently voted “National Course Of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association, it is easy to see why we rank it so highly.

10. Harbour Town Golf links
Harbour Town Golf Links is one of the best Hilton Head golf courses on the island, this 18 Hole Championship golf course is a collaboration between Pete, Alice Dye and Jack Nicklaus it encapsulates the best in all of their work all-in-one-place. This award-winning golf course is host annually to the RBC Heritage PGA tour event every April, the Harbour Town course is always featured amongst the top 100 golf courses in the world.
The famous 18th Hole over the lake towards the lighthouse is one of the most feared on in golf and is also one of the most photographed too. With this as a finishing hole, a par here is an achievement and also another bucket list golf course ticked off; and one of the best golf experiences you can enjoy.

South Carolina is located in the Deep South of America and is, without doubt, the capital of golf in the USA. The “Palmetto State” offers diverse landscapes from the Atlantic dunes, marshlands and up to the Blue mountains; with stunning bucket-list golf courses to match.

Where to Play Golf in South Carolina?
The three main regions for golf holidays are; Charleston, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach – here are our golfing highlights:
Golf in Charleston
Charleston is a fantastic city to base yourself for a golf break; rich in history, superb restaurant scene, lively harbour and remarkable golf courses.
There are three courses to note to kick things off, all within a short drive of Charleston city centre. Patriots Point Links – This harbourfront great is located just a five-minute drive from the city centre with fantastic views of the city, the harbour front and For Sumter. Dunes West – A course with a history built on the site of the antebellum Lexington Plantation. The course is carved into the Bermuda covered Dunes and overlooked by 200-year-old Oak trees. Charleston National – The hidden gem in Charleston as the only non-resort in the area and another great design from Rees Jones. The natural terrain has been used to create a fair golf test squeezed between pine & oak forests across the wetlands and lagoon.
Where to Stay in Charleston?
Our favourite hotel recommendation in the Downtown area is the Francis Marion Hotel, a classic example of luxury and traditional design, at the heart of the city. Another option would be to take in the charm of the Waterfront, stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Charleston Waterfront. This hotel overlooks the Ashley River, a haven of peace and tranquillity.
When playing golf in Charleston, you can’t help but think of the Ryder Cup. Only 45-minutes from the city is the one-and-only Kiawah Island. A golfing mecca that attracts golfers from all over the world, aspiring to relive the moment in 1991 when Bernhard Langer missed his putt on the Ocean Course’s final hole.
Kiawah Island has a collection of five fantastic golf courses, and we will focus on three courses of note. Kiawah Island Ocean Course – This 1991 Ryder Cup Venue designed by the great Pete Dye, sits with unobstructed views of the beautiful Atlantic coastline on every hole. Kiawah Island Turtle Point – Jack Nicklaus has put his stamp on Kiawah with this fantastic traditional layout, with tight fairways and small greens, those of us who can hit straight need to think ahead for the next challenging shot. Our last choice here is the. Kiawah Osprey Point, golf course a Tom Fazio design and said to be one of the most picturesque in South Carolina, has wide fairways and inviting greens – don’t be distracted by the native Alligators. They watch cautiously for that errant tee shot.
Where to Stay in Kiawah Island?
Kiawah Island is an excellent place to base your golf trip, an exclusive and luxurious estate in the wilds of the Atlantic Coast. If it’s a deluxe beachfront hotel you are looking for, look no further than the elegant The Sanctuary Hotel at Kiawah Island. A Little More on Charleston
Charleston exudes the best of the deep South, the original settlers arrived back as far as 1670, before the American Civil War. Today this history remains with Charleston; being one of the few cities in America where you can walk freely around Downtown bars, restaurants, and museums. We recommend taking a Charleston tour, its waterfront and any one of the 33 parks with either a horse-drawn carriage, helicopter, bus tours and even walking tours. Recently voted the safest city in South Carolina, Charleston; with its cobblestone streets, quaint shopping and areas of historical note.
Hilton Head Island
Often referred to as “America’s Favourite Island” is located further down to the coast from Charleston and Kiawah and is easily accessible into Savannah (40 minutes away) International airport. Hilton Head Island in relative terms is a small island with plenty to see and do.
Golf in Hilton Head
Golf is the prevalent sport in this region with over 20 courses to choose from. Robert Trent Jones Palmetto Dunes Located right on the Ocean the Jones course is one of three here at Palmetto Dunes, the wind is a contributing factor here and frequents changes direction making every hole here a test of mind and body. Finally, the Hilton Head National This player-friendly classic is another great course designed by the great Gary Player. It is located in the Low Country. A Little More on Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island is located in the Low Country and has a huge range of 250 restaurants. The majority of which are selling wonderful fresh seafood with favourites such as gumbo, oysters, fried okra and fresh steamed shrimp. As with most islands, the beaches here are fantastic with a coastline of 12 miles of golden sand, and unforgettable sunsets, beaches of note are South and Driessen beaches.
Hilton Head offers a fantastic array of watersports to choose from; dolphin safari, fishing charters, adventure cruiser, catamaran’s, island skiff adventures the list goes on and on. Hilton Head is undoubtedly an island for those looking for and or experiencing the great outdoors
Along with the great outdoors comes great shopping and Hilton head certainly also has that one covered. The Tanger Outlets with over 90 outlet stores spread between its two locations with the SERG restaurant shops and the favourite Shelter Cove Harbour Shops. Outdoor sports are prevalent here, including tennis with a wide selection to choose from. Perhaps you wish to try at “Pickle Ball”, the latest outdoor craze a cross between tennis, table tennis and badminton.
Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach sits at the centre of 60 miles of fantastic beach from Little River in the North, down to Murrells Inlet in the South it has the great nickname of The Grand Strand. This continuous stretch of beachline has an extensive collection of great hotels, restaurants, bars and odd the 100+ golf courses or so to choose from.
Golf in Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach is synonymous with golf, being the “Golf Capital of the USA”, with over 100 top quality golf courses to choose from stretching from Kingston Plantation down to Pawleys Island.
Choosing where to play is always tricky when you have so much variety. Three courses of note would be; Caledonia Golf & Fishing Club – With its antebellum-style clubhouse Caledonia is steeped in history surrounded by marshland and live oaks. Caledonia is a World-Class experience. Legends Golf Club is a fantastic selection of 54 holes of golf on three very different golf courses, with the Heathland, Parkland and Moorland all very Scottish in design- great tests all in one place. Myrtle Beach National King’s North, a great Arnold Palmer Design the better of the three on-site courses, features the famous “Gambler” hole with island fairway.
Myrtle Beach is a particular golfing favourite of ours as this is where it all started back in the early 1990s. The popularity of the destination has always been key, and, in particular great value-for-money. Today it still stands as a fantastic example of how good golf in the USA can be, and we are willing to stand by year-after-year.

It depends on where you wish to stay geographically within the region of Myrtle Beach. We have picked a few across the region, for that exact reason. Staying in North Myrtle Beach, we certainly would recommend Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort. This fantastic hotel sits adjacent to both the Ocean and Arcadian Shores Golf Course at Kingston Plantation. Myrtlewood Golf Villas – Great value for money just 15 minutes from the airport and sits on its own two golf courses. A Little More on Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach offers a wide range of restaurants and bars to choose from and there are certain areas of note where both can be employed simultaneously. Barefoot Landing is a popular haunt towards the North End of Myrtle Beach with Greg Norman’s Bar & Grill, Lulu’s and Dicks Last Resort popular favourites. Also, another popular spot is Broadway-At-the-beach with many bars. Restaurants and shopping too, the Hard Rock Café is a popular haunt. If you are looking for a lively and fun evening then look no further than Crocodile Rock’s where musicians duel with each other, it has a fantastic and fun atmosphere. Another fun place to visit and a golfer’s popular haunt is on Ocean Boulevard – Ocean Annies Beach Bar – voted in the top ten of bars in South Carolina serving drinks beachside with live music and Myrtle Beach’s No.1 place to party.

Victoria Hills Golf Club, Deland, Florida
Victoria Hills is not your usual Florida layout and design, The elevation changes are just not in keeping with what you may expect from a typical Florida design. The gentle and undulations on the fairways which are lined with Augusta pines will ensure that you have to think carefully when taking aim from the tee box. The course measures just under the 7,200 yards from the tips and will require not only precision and accuracy but also your thinking cap to attached firmly to your head. Not only is the challenge of this beautiful course a satisfying one but the vista’s that a golfer can experience at Victoria Hills Golf Club are simply wonderful.

The shortest par 5 on the course, The big hitters can take aim down the left-hand side of the large oaks for a shorter second shot taking on this green in two. A good chance of birdie awaits accurate tee shots on the 15th.

Plantation Preserve Golf Course
Arguably South Florida’s finest public golf course, Plantation Preserve has stunning surroundings with panoramic views over Plantation is a regular featured course on the Web.com Tour used for the second stage qualifying. Plantation Preserve’s championship golf course measures 7,148 yards from the Championship tees and is a serious challenge for both professionals and amateurs alike. The course is set in Everglades-inspired wetlands preservation area and features a number of really stand out golf holes. The Island green 9th is a joy to play and is a fantastic short par at just under 300 yards. Plantation Preserve is a bit of a hidden gem and will no doubt be off of most golfer’s radar. Play the percentage game here, A good 5 iron to the middle of this wide fairway will give you good yardage in to attack the pin with your short pitch second shot, as alluring as the temptation is to go for the green in one here, the room for any error is punished with severity.

Soffer Course at Turnberry Isle
Back in the 1960’s Robert Trent Jones Snr was tasked with developing two of the best Florida golf courses for Donald Soffer’s ambitious development and in all fairness, two fantastic golf courses were designed, however, they were typical flat Southern Florida layouts that were being mass-produced in the ’60s and ’70s and although they were indeed very good designed golf courses it was the recent transformation that saw membership numbers treble and once Raymond Floyd completed his total overhaul of the Soffer course in 2006 the golf course clearly reached its potential. With gently contoured fairways, and the most spectacular water features and much more definition in elevation, this golf course now is unique in design and an absolute delight to play golf on.

Location: 19999 W Country Club Drive, Aventura, Florida
Eagle Golf Tours Signature Hole: 18th | Par 5 | 571 yards
A decent-sized par 5 dogleg right requires a good tee shot down the right for the best chance of making in two, although taking the safe approach down the left will give you the best view into a large putting green with much more club required. the 18th is a great finishing hole on a superb golf course.

LPGA International
Located in Daytona Beach the LPGA International is a class act in golf course architecture. Designed by Arthur Hills and a Signature collection of courses, Arthur has used a superb natural setting to create a masterpiece. The course features natural wetlands, distinct narrow pine-lined fairways, minuscule greens, and strategically placed water hazards. The Hills course is regularly used and the main golf facility used by the Ladies Professional Golf Association and is one of the most enjoyable layouts in the Daytona area.

A great almost 90-degree dogleg left requires a precise tee shot over the lake that runs all down the left-hand side, The bigger hitters can take more off of this hole by playing close to the tree line taking aim at the greenside bunker, leaving a chip to this tricky two-tiered green.

Naples Beach Golf Club
At age 10, Jack Nicklaus first broke 40 for nine holes on the resort’s course at Naples Beach, shooting a 37. Naples Beach opened for play in 1947 making the course the oldest in Naples and in 2010 overseeing a full makeover by the golden bear himself, Jack. Although not classified as a signature design Naples offers a fantastic incredibly manicured golf course that is friendly for all levels of golfers, The fairways are pretty wide and the whole course is amazingly attractive to the eye.

Eagle Golf Tours Signature Hole: 16th | Par 3 | 171 yards
Water absolutely everywhere on this mid-length par 3, Although not a super long hole the safe play is to take aim at the left centre of this large putting surface, the ideal line is just right of the left greenside bunker, dependant on where the pin is, a two put should be bread and butter.

Innisbrook Copperhead
Some PGA Professionals say that Copperhead is one of the best golf courses in Florida that they play in the season. Home to the Valspar Championship. Copperhead was designed by E. Lawrence Packard and is one of four golf courses on the Innisbrook Resort in Tampa. Copperhead is set in stunning natural forests with surrounding lakes gratifying all that nature has to offer.
A challenging par 71 at over 7,200 yards from the back tees. Dick Wilson a former construction superintendent at Shinnecock Hills originally designed the Blue course at Doral, and virtually every great golfer in the world has played at the Blue Monster since it’s first USPGA tour debut in 1962. The Blue Monster was given a complete transformation by Gil Hanse in 2014 and now measures a gigantic 7608 yards from the Championship tee’s making it one of the longest and toughest courses used by the PGA Tour. In 2014 Tiger Woods was out to defend his World Golf Championships title in a field where only 3 professionals bettered the Monsters par.

Often ranked in the top 100 golf holes in the world, this monstrous par 4 bares its teeth at every moment. For those that try to avoid the water up the left side will likely end up in a grove of palm trees to the right of the fairway or worse case in the two giant-sized bunkers dead-on average driving distance. Easing back from the tee brings the water and two greenside bunkers even more into play on the second shot. Only those with audacity will earn a birdie here.

HOME OF THE HONDA CLASSIC- ONE OF THE BEST GOLF COURSES IN THE US
A battleground for the 1983 Ryder Cup which was one of the closest in the history of the format. On the final day and with ten matches over the scores were at 13 points apiece, The outright winner depended on the two singles matches remaining on the course Jose Maria Cañizares and Lanny Wadkins and Berhard Gallacher vs Tom Watson. The USA was victorious on this occasion claiming the 25th Ryder Cup 14½ to 13½.
Tom and George Fazio originally designed the Champion Course however it’s a most recent overhaul and redesign in 2002 have really seen the course become a Nicklaus golf course with its infamous “Bear Trap” Holes 15 -17 where the Honda Classic is usually won or lost. One of the best golf courses in Florida.

Arnold Palmer fell in love when he first visited Bay Hill Golf club & Lodge in 1965 and purchased the resort in 1976 and lived there until he sadly passed away in 2016. The course, originally designed by Dick Wilson has seen the “King” remodel almost every hole since the purchase and today is home of the Arnold Palmer Invitational which is one of the most popular golf tournaments on the while PGA Tour.
The golf course is actually a 27 hole complex however the most desired 18 holes and the combination used by the PGA Tour is know as Challenger & Champion.
From the black tee’s the Championship layout at Bay Hill can be stretched to 7,381 yards and is commonly regarded as one of the very best golf resorts in the whole of America.

Arguably the most recognizable golf hole’s on the entire planet, the 17th at Sawgrass is as much an icon as some of the games greatest ever golfers. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is one of Pete Dye’s most celebrated golf courses. The 17th was actually never part of Pete’s original design and in intention was to have water running down the right-hand side of this short par 3, however, Alice Dye had a different vision for the golf hole and the rest, as they say, is history. Sawgrass is often remembered for the 17th Island green however the remaining 17 holes are absolute classics and superb Dye design. The front 9 is actually very tree-lined and tight with amazing bunker and water placement that offers real risk and reward play. The back 9 opens up a bit more and is lengthened with equally as much water in play.
Currently ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the world, The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass should be on every golfer’s bucket list. Often noted as one of the best public golf courses in Florida.

Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa
Taking on the 17th at Sawgrass must be almost top of every amateur golfer and our resident USA Golf Travel expert, Robin Couchman, did just that for Eagle Golf and can tell you about his outcome and the best value packages we have to offer.
Playing the TPC Stadium at Sawgrass had been a long time goal of mine, especially as it has been a permanent fixture on the PGA Tour and my TV for many years, with the excitement and recognition as the “5th Major” and one of the few events that take place year after year at the same venue.
With access from several UK airports to Orlando, Sawgrass is just over a 2-hour drive away, and it is a relatively simple trip to do. You need to stay on property at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort and Spa to play the course, but this does not have to be for the entire duration. I enjoyed a few nights in Orlando first, staying on International Drive and playing some excellent local golf at Shingle Creek and Falcons Fire and then took the “pilgrimage” to Jacksonville for one night staying in a lovely villa room.
The Marriott has some excellent facilities, including a rejuvenating spa, 5 swimming pools and four restaurants offering various cuisine. However, it is the golf that I had come to play and precisely the Stadium course. It starts with a relatively tame Par 4 1st hole, but there is not much room for error with penal rough and lightning-fast greens. The course is not one of the longest on tour and playing from the Blues at 6,670 yards it was a challenge, but not intimidating (that only comes later in the round!!!). Water comes in to play on the majority of holes. Some large expansive bunkers are also a prominent feature predominantly on the Par 5 11th, where should you be able to go for the green in two, it will mean avoiding sand the size of the Sahara desert! However, the entire build-up as I went played around the course, was to reach the last 3 holes, the par 5 16th is a pretty straight and long hole that requires accurate placement from tee to green and risk and reward if you want to take this on in two, I played the safe three-shot route to make my par.
Next was 17 which has had countless balls lost in the water and tournaments won and lost, and that day it was playing 143 yards (as they can move the tee block around the waterside). I decided to play a hard pitching wedge and made the front right half of the green. The flag was located on the back left, and I decided that I would not waste this opportunity, hit the putt firm and to my amazement and utter joy it went it and a memory never to be wiped from my brain! With the impact of this, I flushed my drive down the 18th, (a nervy tee shot at the best of times) to the right side of the fairway. It is a substantial finishing hole, and dogleg left Par 4 with water down the left side. I popped my second shot on to the green and finished with a par.
These last 3 holes do not disappoint and neither does the rest of the course. It’s a bucket list experience that can be done in 24 hours as part of a Florida golf experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

As I arrived at the Lodge at Bay Hill, I soon realised how this felt…it was like I was travelling to my own local golf club, not a high rise, all singing all dancing big hotel, more a low level, understated, classic looking lodge that was like an extension to the clubhouse with luxurious rooms and suites, all flowing into one.
It is only 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle of International Drive in central Orlando and yet set in the suburbs of Orlando in a relative peaceful and tranquil location. I felt at home straight away and took a nice stroll around the Resort and there are two main dining areas at the “Grill and Classic Room”, which serves breakfast and lunch, or the Bay Window restaurant that overlooks the putting green and iconic Rolex Watch Tower. The spa is serene and ideal after a tough 18 holes to sit back, relax and find out where it all went wrong!
With just a short walk from your room to the clubhouse, it’s a very easy way to start your day with excellent practice facilities close by and then over to the first tee for what is a relatively straight forward dog leg left and the chance to start with a par. There are 27 holes in total as part of the set up here, of which the Champion and Challenger 9s’ are the PGA Tour course and this is where I was lucky enough to play. The additional 9 (named the Charger) is also an excellent set of holes to variate your stay with different combinations of 18. As you work your way around the course, you will start to recognise some iconic holes, especially the Par 5 6th hole that follows around the water, where many have tried and failed to bite of more than they can chew and taking on the green in two. The course comes into life right at the end with a treacherous Par 3 17th that is over water and making a 3 here will certainly put you in good stead for the tricky 18th with out of bounds all down the left and a measured approach over water once again.
The trademark umbrella logo is all around and evident on everything, from merchandise, refreshment cups to the golf carts and even the PGA Pros have now taken to adding it to their own attire on shoes and caps and a fitting tribute to Arnold himself. One unusual quirk is the bar in the locker room and it was said that Arnold Palmer himself spent many a happy time there, meeting lots of players and taking time out to talk about the course and golf in general…if only I had got that chance!
PGA National Golf Resort & Spa
With the Honda Classic just days away, let Eagle Golf give you a great insight into the wonderful set up at the PGA National Resort with a personal experience from our leading golf expert to the USA, Robin Couchman.
I have been fortunate enough to visit the PGA National Resort twice over the years and would not hesitate to take the third visit there tomorrow, given the opportunity. With regards to location, it is in West Palm Beach, a stunning stretch of coastline along the west coast of Florida and although the resort is not on the beach, it’s only a short drive away should you want to feel the sand (that’s not in a bunker!) between your toes! It is easily accessible with a direct flight into Miami or Orlando and straight forward drive, or travel via a US hub to West Palm Beach Airport and there is no need for vehicle hire.
After a recent renovation at the resort, especially all their rooms, even the lead in “Resort Guest Room” now has stylish bedding, large flatscreen televisions and soft furnishings to make it feel like a home from home. There are ample places to eat and drink on the resort, such as the Ironwood Steak and Seafood restaurant, Bar 91 and the “iBar” is my absolute favorite choice.
The iBar is based right in the lobby area which sounds odd, but actually works really well, with an ideal welcome upon arrival after a long flight. The atmosphere really ramps up at the weekend (Thurs through Saturday) with live music and many locals, as well as residents, enjoying the variety of drinks and cocktails available, with the patio and firepits an added attraction, just steps away. To go off property, it’s only around a 15-minute drive or taxi to downtown West Palm with many more things on offer.
First and foremost, the golf is what you come here for and with 5 excellent courses (4 on-site and 1 just minutes away), this becomes an easy choice for a 5 or 7-night stay to play all of the courses, with the hi-light being the PGA Tour Honda Classic Champions Course. Let’s start with the others, to begin with, and the Estates Course (located 5 miles off property) is an ideal first-round course, not the longest, but with plenty of strategically placed bunkers and water hazards to keep you on your toes and sharpen your game. It has generous fairways and is ideal for all standards of players from beginner to professional.
The Fazio and Squires are two courses designed by Tom and George Fazio and between them they cater to a lot of “risk and reward” holes entwined with quite a few dog-legs and therefore precise iron play required, to get the best score possible. The Palmer course (originally designed by Arnold Palmer as the name would suggest) had a recent make-over and it is one of the more scenic courses with undulating fairways and will take all your concentration to make sure you pick the right yardage for every approach shot.
Finally, it is Champion by name and Champion by nature, a course that as tested some of the very best on Tour, with the cream rising to the top providing past winners including Rory Mcilroy, Justin Thomas, Ricky Fowler, Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar, Ernie Els, and our Ryder Cup Captain Padraig Harrington…twice!
Renowned for the treacherous Bear Trap, holes 15, 16 and 17 consists of two Par 3’s over water and a strong Par 4 with water all along one side and as Jack Nicklaus once said… “It should be won or lost right here”…and seeing as he re-designed these 3 holes in 2014, he should know! As far as I was concerned, I was just happy to try and hang on to the same golf ball for these 3 holes, which I managed, albeit with one par and two bogies! The course is a wonderful testament to both design and enjoyment, with 5 different sets of tees to make it possible for all standard of golfer, to try their best to match the pros!
I am a big fan of the PGA National Resort and Spa, with its modern feel to a classic set up and a place that many will come to experience and want to return year after year.

The latest addition designed by European Golf Design and managed by none other than Troon Golf opened its doors just over a year ago, the Dubai Hills golf course has just received the prestigious award of “The World’s Best New Golf Course” at the World Golf Awards, coincidentally held in Abu Dhabi earlier this month. This award adds some testimony and goes even further to rubber stamping even more reasons to visit this fantastic region and one that is growing two-fold year-by-year. The pick of the bunch and our favourite is the oldest and most established, the Abu Dhabi golf club located just a short ride from the main city centre. This 18 Hole Championship golf course currently hosts the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship which runs between 15 – 19 January 2020
Golf in Dubai is some of the best in the world it has a wider selection to choose from, currently these are, Dubai Creek, Arabian Ranches, Jumeirah Golf Estates has two courses the Fire Golf club and the Earth golf course which will be host the DP World Golf Championships 21-24 November 2019 the finale to the Race To Dubai, Montgomerie Dubai, The Els Club, Trump International, Emirates has two courses Faldo and our favourite is the Emirates Majlis GC, one of the first built in Dubai with its signature clubhouse echoing back to its cultural past the Majlis exudes quality, yet retaining a little of the history and views over the course across to its now-signature skyline are nothing short of “impressive”, the Majlis will host the Omega Desert Classic 23-26 January 2020. Dubai Hills golf course the newest golf course which only opened its doors in 2018, has just been voted the 2019 Best New Golf Course in the World, last but by no means least is the Meydan golf which sits adjacent to the Meydan Racing track venue for the world’s richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup with a purse of $12 million, this course has floodlights and therefore you have the option of playing 9 or 18 holes in the evening dusk into darkness, whatever your preference golfing in Dubai is as good as it gets, don’t take our word for it, try it out for yourself,
Where Can I Stay?
Staying in Dubai it depends on what you are looking for the choice is unparalleled, I mean dependant on your location, firstly let’s re-iterate Dubai has some of, in fact, the most luxurious hotels in the World, The Burj-Al-Arab is the only seven (7) star hotel in the world where you can find the highest reception of any hotel anywhere in the world, and one of the most elaborate with the dancing fountains inside the reception area between the two escalators leading up to the main concourse of the hotel. Everything in the Burj-Al Arab that looks gold is in fact 24-carat gold leaf. If you are looking for golf & beach then staying in the Jumeirah Beach area (of which the Burj-Al-Arab is located.) may suit you better just minutes away from 4 of the area’s top golf courses.
Our preferred hotel of choice in Jumeirah would be the 5* Rixos Premium Hotel, located in the prestigious Jumeriah Beach Residence district (or JBR) just a five minute walk away from the Dubai Marina Mall and surrounded by an endless array of bars and restaurants If you are looking to stay near to and wish to take in the city center and the gold Souks then what better place to stay then the Dubai Creek Marina, our Hotel Choice every time here is the Park Hyatt Hotel, adjacent to the fantastic Dubai creek golf course and a short taxi or mono-rail back into the city. If you are looking for a more waterfront based theme to your trip then the best place to stay would be the Dubai Marina, with plenty going on from bars, restaurants, and shopping galore, our preferred Hotel here is most definitely The Address Dubai Marina, a fantastic 5* Hotel with outstanding views either back into the marina or out across the beach, a short walk away from the Marina Mall and tram station.
Abu Dhabi is slightly different from Dubai, not in its quality but n that it is laid out differently, if you are looking for a stay near to and around Abu Dhabi (The Capital of the UAE) then what better place to stay than the fantastic Westin Abu Dhabi which sits and overlooks the regions oldest and most established golf course in the Abu Dhabi golf club. This 5* luxurious property has extensive views across the golf course and downtown Abu Dhabi is 10 minutes in a taxi. Abu Dhabi is spread out over a wide area across some of the islands literally off the coast, two of which have come to fruition and are now extensively populated. Yas Island has the fantastic Yas Island golf course and a wide choice of top-class resorts and residences, as well as the Yas Island Formula 1 racing circuit, Ferrari World, and fantastic white-sand beaches. Our preferred hotel here is the popular Crowne Plaza Yas Island. The other island is Saadiyat Island which also has an extensive coastline of fantastic beaches and resorts our preferred resort here is the fantastic Rixos Saadiyat Island.

I was fortunate enough to visit to play golf in Qatar this year and the opportunity to play the two fantastic Championship courses they now have on offer to the golfing public. I believe this makes it a very viable and exciting “new” place to play golf. There will be a series of 3 posts with various offers and information about everything (focusing on the golf) that this middle eastern gem has on offer, starting with the “new kid on the block” Education City.
Opened in January 2020, Education City is fast earning itself quite a reputation. It will host the Qatar Masters (part of the European Tour Schedule 2019/2020) in March and after my round, I can see this will be a true test for all the professionals, that they will both enjoy and find challenging. Set to the backdrop of a wonderful skyline that includes one of the new stadiums for the Soccer World Cup in 2022, this 7306 yard Par 72 has all the typical hallmarks of the high standard you might expect from such a location. It was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal and the immaculately groomed course has subtle elevation changes, USGA greens, winding through the desert and wadi terrain.
However, it is not all about the 18-hole course, as they have also got one eye on the future generation of golfers with a Championship designed 6-hole golf course that encourage new players to the game and allows those golfers looking for a quick round, to still feel like they are able to get the best out of their time. Often referred to as America’s home of golf, its no wonder many choose Pinehurst golf holidays for their first golfing trip across the pond. I have been fortunate enough to visit Pinehurst many times over the years. The area is actually known as Sandhills, composing of three villages, Aberdeen, Southern Pines and of course, Pinehurst.
It is a simple destination to get too with direct flights from London into either Raleigh Durham or Charlotte and after just an hour or so, you have arrived at a tranquil golfing piece of heaven. Many of the famous course designers have all managed to get their hands on some land here to produce some excellent layouts that are a joy to play.
We are all familiar with the famous Carolina Hotel with the Pinehurst logo written in the grounds in front, but there are two other properties linked to the Resort at the boutique Holly Inn and the more informal and relaxed Manor Inn. You have to stay on site to play any of the numbered courses from 1-9, which naturally includes the “world famous” Pinehurst No 2 and host to numerous prestigious events. Having played it twice, I can tell you it lives up to all expectations, and the changes to the course made a few years ago have enhanced the playing experience.
There is no more heavy rough, but instead a first cut and then waste and scrub, which means you will more than likely find your ball, but the lie may be tricky! The greens have been commonly referred to as “upturned saucers”, and while they are fast and slopey, with a bit of thought and planning, you soon adjust to the superb conditions of these fantastic greens.
To get the best value out of your trip to this area, then I highly recommend a two-centre stay within the village, either at the well-appointed Springhill Suites or in one of the lodges or condos at Mid South and Talamore. With over 20 courses in the area, you can get to play some fantastic tracks such as Mid Pines, Mid South, Talamore and Legacy, or test yourself at one of my favourites “Tobacco Road”. All of these are highly recommended, and the accommodation is also of the best quality and keeps the cost down to be able to afford the high-light Number 2.
The area of Sandhills is becoming more and more popular for residential living and so with that, comes more restaurants and bars. Even though there is that lovely village feel with many residents driving around from their homes to the course or shops in their golf carts, it is still possible for those that want it, to find the livelier atmosphere and mix with the locals.
